On April 2nd, at Toshi's Living Room in the Flatiron Hotel, we are hosting "Startups, Eh?", a Canadian tech showcase. The event will feature our second Canadian cohort of early stage technology companies looking to make a splash in our New York City! The event will not only feature some Canadian tech awesomeness but an esteemed venture panel including White Star Capital, Scout Ventures, Women Innovate Mobile, and Gotham Ventures!


This event is part of VentureOutCanada II, our second one-week NY Market Accelerator program for Canadian tech startups taking place from from March 30th to April 4th (see details from our first program here).  We are excited about our continued partnership with the Canadian Venture Capital Association (CVCA) and Toronto’s Extreme Startups, which will help us bring the best early-stage tech companies in Canada to New York City. 


The Program

We have recruited 10 of the most promising Canadian tech startups to take part in our one week US business expansion program that features:

  • Cap Intro: Introductions to esteemed venture investors and accelerator programs, i.e. Gotham Ventures, ff Venture Capital, and ERA

  • Workshops: Educate and assist with visas and immigration, U.S. business formation, sales and marketing strategy, accounting, hiring, and more

  • Networking: Events with 150+ members of NYC’s tech community

  • Pitch Night: Demo to investor panel and NYC tech leaders

  • Tours: Visit successful tech companies i.e. Etsy, Huffington Post, AOL, Sailthru, and Big Spaceship

Eric Martineau-Fortin

Managing Partner, White Star Capital

Eric is a founder and managing partner of White Star Capital and has close to 20 years of investment banking and VC experience. He was previously a founding member and Partner of Messier & Associés, a transatlantic boutique M&A advisory firm in the media and technology space. Eric also worked in mergers and acquisitions at Merrill Lynch in New York and London as well as at ABN AMRO in corporate finance and private equity in Paris, London and Amsterdam. Over his career, Eric has been involved in transactions valued in excess of $10 billion. He has been doing early-stage investments since 2007 and has led multiple investments including Ludia, Betaworks and Science Inc, in which he holds Board seats, Dollar Shave Club, Bloglovin’ and Summly. Eric graduated from HEC Montreal and holds an M. Sc. in Finance from the ESSEC in France. He was born in Canada, is married to a French national and has two American daughters.

Kelly Hoey

Women Innovate Mobile, Co-Founder

Listed in Forbes as one of five women changing the world of VC/Entrepreneurship, Kelly is a connection-maker and networking strategist. She has helped clients (ranging from Fortune 500 to fashion to private equity to AmLaw 200) with community engagement online and IRL. Kelly was the first president of global business networking group 85 Broads and worked directly with CEO/Founder Janet Hanson on network-building strategies and membership growth and expansion. Prior to her entrepreneurial leap, Kelly was immersed in the legal world, first as an attorney then in law firm management. She sits on the advisory boards of Lion’esque Style and The Levo League. Kelly is a member of the inaugural Pipeline Fellowship class of angel investors.

Brad Harrison

Managing Partner, Scout Ventures

Bradley C. Harrison is an entrepreneur and seasoned business development executive with a passion for technology, media, entertainment and lifestyle. Brad has a great deal of experience launching new ventures. While attending MIT, he worked as a Partner in a seed stage venture fund, ITU Ventures, and helped launch a joint MIT-Harvard incubator. While serving as Director of Media Strategy and Development at AOL, Brad co-authored 3 patents in search, geo-tagging, and personalization, with Edmund Fish, Senior Vice President and General Manager at AOL. Following AOL, Brad helped raise $40M in venture funding for a contextual online advertising network. Prior to launching his business career, Brad served in the United States Army for five years, earning both Airborne and Ranger qualifications and retired as Captain.

Lucas Nelson

Principal, Gotham Ventures

Lucas Nelson is a Principal at Gotham Ventures and is a proud geek; a hacker turned VC. Lucas brings a unique mix of technical depth and business knowledge to bear when Gotham Ventures works with a company. He is most excited by companies that are trying to use technology to make a dent in the universe.

Lucas works most closely with Gotham Ventures Portfolio companies STELLAService and ADstruc as well as his angel investments in Branch, DarkNet, and WayWire. He is a Kauffman Fellow, co-authored The Art of Software Security Testing, chaired DefCon – the largest hacking convention in the US – for 10 years, and has been a member of the NY tech community since 1999. Prior to coming to DFJ Gotham, Mr. Nelson was a senior manager for product security at Adobe following his time as an investment associate at US Venture Partners. Mr. Nelson received his B.S. from Purdue in Computer Science and an M.B.A. from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.

ER Accelerator

Entrepreneurs Roundtable Accelerator (ERA) is an early-stage seed fund and technology accelerator created by New Yorkers, for New York.
